AutoShorts.ai, Crayo and Vidpal all make faceless vertical videos, but they do different jobs. AutoShorts runs an auto-posting series for $19 to $69 a month (about 13 to 60 videos) and posts to TikTok, YouTube and Instagram. Crayo is a clip generator with an editor: $19 to $79 a month buys 250 to 3,000 generations, 100+ voices and 32 caption styles, but you download and post every file yourself. Vidpal turns a topic, a script or an article URL into a captioned Short for 1 credit (15 to 100 credits a month for $19 to $69) and publishes to Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and LinkedIn on Pro and Business at no extra credit cost.
This comparison is for faceless creators choosing a production tool in late 2026: people running story, fact, motivation or niche-news channels on YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Reels. It covers one full comparison table, the real price per Short on every plan, inputs and sources, voices, styles and captions, auto-posting, free plans and watermarks, recommendations by use case, a 30-day test plan and the mistakes that waste a month. Competitor details come from AutoShorts' and Crayo's own pricing pages, FAQs and feature pages, read on October 23, 2026; where a detail is not published, the table says so.

AutoShorts vs Crayo vs Vidpal: The Quick Verdict
Pick AutoShorts if you want the least possible work for one evergreen niche, pick Crayo if you want high volume and hands-on control of viral formats, and pick Vidpal if you want topic-driven or article-driven Shorts that publish to several platforms with consistent branding.
AutoShorts is built around a series: a saved automation that writes, voices, illustrates and posts a new video on the cadence your plan allows. You choose a preset topic or write a custom prompt once, and the series keeps going without you. Every plan includes one series, so a second niche means paying for another series or opening a second account. It is the most hands-off of the three tools and also the narrowest.
Crayo has the opposite shape. It is a web editor with generators for Reddit story videos, fake text conversations and automatic clipping, plus a voice library, a gameplay footage library and 32 caption styles. Its allowances are large for the price and every plan includes every tool. What it does not do is publish: Crayo's own comparison page says there is no native scheduling or auto-posting, so the upload step stays with you.
Vidpal sits between the two. Studio writes and renders a Short from a topic, a full script or a web page, with 20 visual styles, four background sources and 75 caption presets, while Auto Reels pulls real stories from RSS feeds, Hacker News and web search on a schedule. Finished videos publish immediately or on a schedule to four platforms on the Pro and Business plans, and publishing itself costs no credit.
What Do the Key Terms Mean?
Each tool meters work differently, so it helps to define the units before comparing prices.
- A faceless Short is a vertical 9:16 video, usually under 90 seconds, built from narration, captions and visuals without the creator appearing on camera.
- An AutoShorts series is an automation that creates and uploads AI videos on a fixed schedule from one topic or prompt, linked to one account per platform.
- A Crayo workflow credit is one AI-generated video, whether an AutoClip run, a Reddit story or a fake text video; export minutes and voiceover minutes are metered separately.
- A Vidpal credit is the unit Vidpal charges per render: 1 for a Studio Short, 5 for a long video of 1 to 10 minutes.
- Auto-posting means the tool uploads to a platform through a connected account; exporting means you receive an MP4 and upload it yourself.

Two caveats keep the last row honest. AutoShorts' price includes posting, while Crayo's excludes it entirely, and Vidpal's Starter plan exports but does not publish. And Crayo's figure is a ceiling set by its voiceover minutes, explained in the next section, so a 30-second Short costs roughly half.
How Much Does Each Tool Cost per Short?
At monthly prices, AutoShorts costs about $1.15 to $1.46 per posted video, Crayo about $0.33 to $0.63 per one-minute narrated video, and Vidpal $0.69 to $1.27 per Short, and annual billing lowers all three.
AutoShorts is the easiest to calculate because its plans are priced by posting frequency. Starter posts three times a week, which is about 13 videos a month, so $19 works out to $1.46 each. Daily posts about 30 videos for $39 ($1.30), and Hardcore posts about 60 for $69 ($1.15). The yearly toggle advertises two months free, and the plan data on its site lists $190, $390 and $690 a year. A useful detail from its FAQ: edits that trigger a new render, such as changing the script, do not count against your plan.
Crayo needs two more steps. First, the prices: its pricing page defaults to yearly billing and shows $13, $27 and $55 a month (billed at $160, $327 and $664 a year), while its own comparison page lists $19, $39 and $79 billed month to month. Second, the meter. A workflow credit is one generated video, and even Hobby includes 250 of them, so credits are rarely the limit for a narrated faceless channel. The limit is voiceover minutes: 30 on Hobby, 120 on Clipper and 180 on Pro. If every Short carries 60 seconds of AI narration, Hobby supports about 30 videos ($0.63 each at $19), Clipper about 120 ($0.33 each at $39) and Pro about 180 ($0.44 each at $79). Clipper is the cheapest per narrated minute; Pro pays off when you clip a lot of existing footage, since it raises credits to 3,000 and export time to 30 hours.
AI images are the other Crayo meter worth checking. Hobby includes 100 AI images a month, so if you build each video from eight AI images instead of gameplay footage, the allowance covers roughly a dozen videos. Gameplay and footage-based formats avoid that ceiling.
Vidpal charges 1 credit per Studio Short, reserved when you click Generate, with the first export included. Starter gives 15 credits for $19 ($1.27 per Short), Pro 40 for $39 ($0.98) and Business 100 for $69 ($0.69). Re-rendering after changes costs another credit, so it pays to review the script before you generate. Publishing costs nothing extra: 30 Shorts made and published on Pro is 30 credits. For more on how credit systems compare, see our explainer on AI video credits.
| Tool and plan | Monthly price | Shorts per month | Cost per Short (monthly) | Cost per Short (annual billing) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AutoShorts Starter | $19 | About 13 | $1.46 | $1.22 ($190/yr) |
| AutoShorts Daily | $39 | About 30 | $1.30 | $1.07 ($390/yr) |
| AutoShorts Hardcore | $69 | About 60 | $1.15 | $0.95 ($690/yr) |
| Crayo Hobby | $19 | About 30 narrated minutes | $0.63 | $0.44 ($160/yr) |
| Crayo Clipper | $39 | About 120 narrated minutes | $0.33 | $0.23 ($327/yr) |
| Crayo Pro | $79 | About 180 narrated minutes | $0.44 | $0.31 ($664/yr) |
| Vidpal Starter | $19 | 15 | $1.27 | $0.80 ($144/yr) |
| Vidpal Pro | $39 | 40 | $0.98 | $0.58 ($276/yr) |
| Vidpal Business | $69 | 100 | $0.69 | $0.41 ($492/yr) |
Sticker price per video is only half the cost. Crayo's low number assumes your time is free: at 30 videos a month posted to three platforms, that is 90 manual uploads, each with a title, caption and cover. If an upload takes three minutes, that is four and a half hours a month you are not spending on scripts or ideas. AutoShorts and Vidpal Pro remove that step.
Which Tool Has the Best Inputs and Content Sources?
Vidpal accepts the widest range of inputs, Crayo is strongest when you bring your own story or footage, and AutoShorts accepts only a topic or a custom prompt.
AutoShorts writes every script from your series topic. Its FAQ explains that a custom prompt such as “discuss an interesting fact about Genghis Khan” makes each new video follow the prompt while trying not to repeat earlier videos in the series. That works well for evergreen fiction and trivia. There is no way to point it at a specific article or upload your own footage, and it does not make long-form videos.
Crayo's Reddit story generator turns a pasted or written story into a narrated video, its fake text generator builds chat-style conversations, and AutoClip cuts uploaded files or YouTube and TikTok links into clips. According to Crayo's comparison page, uploads can run from 1 minute to 3 hours and a run returns 1 to 20 clips of 15 to 120 seconds. If your channel is built on stories you collect or footage you own, Crayo starts closer to the finished product.
Vidpal's Studio takes a topic or prompt, a full script you wrote, or a web page URL, and calibrates scripts to about 150 words per minute so a 60-second Short lands near 150 words. Auto Reels goes further for news-style channels: you set topics, and it pulls stories from RSS feeds, Hacker News and web search, writes a script grounded in the real article, picks among hook variants and renders a 9:16 Reel on a schedule. For long recordings, AI Clips finds standalone moments in sources up to 120 minutes on paid plans. If your niche moves with the news, grounding matters more than any other row in the table; our guide to making news videos with AI explains why.
How Do Voices, Visual Styles and Captions Compare?
Crayo offers the most voices and per-clip caption control, AutoShorts offers the most narration languages plus voice cloning, and Vidpal offers the most visual styles and caption presets with a brand kit that keeps every video consistent.
Voices first. Crayo advertises 100+ AI voices on its Reddit story page and says it supports most languages if you type the text in that language. AutoShorts lets you pick a voice per series, does not publish a voice count, supports 30 series languages from Arabic to Ukrainian, and includes voice cloning on every paid plan. Vidpal's system voices are grouped by language (English, Multilingual, Spanish, French, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese and Other) with male and female options and previews. Vidpal retired voice cloning in May 2026, and Studio narration captions are English; other languages go through the editor's Translate panel, which adds captions in 30 languages and voice dubbing in 8, without lip-sync. If native narration in Polish or Thai matters, AutoShorts is the better fit.
Visuals split the tools by format. AutoShorts generates a still AI image for each scene and uses motion credits (27, 62 or 124 a month by plan) to animate some of them; image credits let you replace a weak image. Crayo leans on a built-in gameplay and visual library for split-screen formats and adds 100 to 500 AI images a month. Vidpal offers four background sources (stock footage, AI generated images, gameplay videos and oddly satisfying videos) and 20 AI image styles from cinematic and anime to claymation, stickman and pixel art. Gameplay and oddly satisfying backgrounds are Shorts-only and play as a looping clip behind the narration rather than a split screen, and AI images are stills with camera motion, not animation. Vidpal can also open a Short with a hook intro: a curated viral clip, a Text Reveal, or a generated Text to Video or Image to Video clip that costs one extra credit only when it succeeds.
Captions are where the numbers diverge most. Crayo lists 32 caption styles, 16 that show one word at a time and 16 that show full lines with the spoken word marked, on every plan, with custom fonts, colors and position. AutoShorts includes generated captions but does not publish its style options. Vidpal has 75 caption presets, such as Mozi, Beasty, Karaoke, Hook Punch and Highlighter Box, about 18 animations including Karaoke Pop and Word Punch, and a Lines control for one word, three words or automatic. Vidpal's Brand Kit then applies your caption preset, colors, font and logo to every Studio, AI Editing and AI Clips video, which matters once you run more than one channel.
Which Tools Post to TikTok, YouTube and Instagram for You?
AutoShorts and Vidpal publish for you; Crayo does not, so every Crayo video is a manual upload.
AutoShorts posts to TikTok, YouTube and Instagram, with one connected channel per platform per series, and its automation guide notes that Instagram needs a Professional account. Review is optional: scheduled videos do not wait for an approval click, and pausing a series stops future posts but cannot recall an upload already sent. The cadence is fixed by your plan, so a Daily subscriber posts once a day, every day.
Crayo's faceless channel page describes a one-click export that is ready to upload, and its comparison page states plainly that there is no native scheduling or auto-posting. Crayo does include a View Tracker that follows views across Instagram, YouTube and TikTok accounts, with 100 to 2,500 tracking credits a month.
Vidpal puts a Publish panel on every finished video. On Pro and Business it posts immediately or schedules up to 90 days ahead to connected Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and LinkedIn accounts, and Auto Reels can publish automatically. Publishing costs no credit. The optional Social Scheduler preparation, which writes per-platform copy from the transcript and makes one AI thumbnail, costs 1 credit per post and suggests posting times from platform benchmarks rather than from your own audience. Vidpal does not publish to Facebook pages. If you plan a month at a time, our guide to batch-creating and bulk-scheduling a month of Shorts walks through the workflow.
Do AutoShorts, Crayo or Vidpal Have a Free Plan or a Watermark?
Only Vidpal has a working free tier right now, and it is deliberately limited; AutoShorts' free plan is paused and Crayo lists no free plan.
AutoShorts still shows a $0 card for one watermarked video and one series, but the card is marked “Temporarily paused,” and its FAQ says the free plan was suspended because of abuse from botting and spamming. Paid plans remove the watermark. Crayo's pricing page lists three paid plans and no free tier; its separate free tools, such as a compressor and trimmer, work in the browser without an account, and it does not publish a watermark policy because generation requires a plan.
Vidpal's Free plan gives 4 one-time credits, not monthly ones. Free cannot export Studio, AI Editing or AI Clips videos; only Auto Reels and Image Posts render on Free, and they carry a “Made with Vidpal” watermark. Treat it as a way to see the output before paying, not as a production plan.
Refunds deserve a line too. AutoShorts' FAQ says it does not offer refunds and that you agree at sign-up to waive them, and Crayo's pricing FAQ says it does not offer refunds either. Crayo's subscription credits reset each billing cycle without rolling over. Both cancel in a click, but the money for the current period is spent.
Which Should You Choose? Recommendations by Use Case
The right tool depends on your format, your languages and how much of the upload step you want to keep.
- Reddit stories, fake text dramas or brainrot gameplay channels: Crayo. Its generators are built for exactly these formats and Clipper is the cheapest per narrated minute.
- One evergreen niche with zero ongoing time (scary stories, history facts, motivation): AutoShorts Daily. Set the series once and it posts every day.
- Narration in languages other than English: AutoShorts, with 30 series languages. Vidpal translates captions and dubs in 8 languages but does not narrate natively in other languages.
- Your own cloned voice on every video: AutoShorts, since Vidpal retired voice cloning.
- Niche news, tech, finance or anything that needs real sources: Vidpal Auto Reels or Studio's From URL input.
- Cutting your own long videos, podcasts or streams into clips: Crayo AutoClip (sources up to 3 hours) or Vidpal AI Clips (up to 120 minutes on paid plans, with a virality score calibrated to each transcript).
- Several platforms including LinkedIn, one brand look and scheduled posting: Vidpal Pro or Business.
- The lowest budget with high volume, and you do not mind uploading: Crayo Clipper.
If two rows fit you, pick by the row that costs you the most time today. A Reddit story channel that spends hours uploading may get more from an auto-posting tool than from cheaper generation, and a news channel that spends hours researching will feel Vidpal's grounded scripts more than any caption style. The existing head-to-head pages go deeper on each pair: Vidpal as an AutoShorts alternative and Vidpal as a Crayo alternative.
How Can You Test All Three in 30 Days?
Run the same five topics through each tool for a month and compare retention, time spent and cost per published Short, not first impressions.
Step 1: Pick five topics from your niche and write them down before you open any tool, so each one gets the same raw material. Use one channel per tool, or alternate days on one channel, so the audience is comparable.
Step 2: Budget the month. AutoShorts Starter, Crayo Hobby and Vidpal Starter cost $19 each, $57 in total, which covers about 13, 30 and 15 Shorts respectively. Vidpal Starter exports without publishing, so upload those by hand for the test or use Pro if you want to test its publishing too.
Step 3: Time yourself. Log minutes spent per published Short, including fixing scripts, swapping images and uploading. This number usually decides the winner more than output quality does.
Step 4: After 30 days, compare average view duration and the viewed-versus-swiped-away rate in YouTube Studio, plus average watch time in TikTok analytics. Ignore raw views from the first week, which swing with the algorithm.
Step 5: Keep the tool with the best retention per hour of your time, then upgrade only that one. Do not buy an annual plan before this point, since neither competitor refunds.
Common Mistakes When Choosing a Faceless Shorts Tool
The most expensive mistakes are about volume, originality and accounts rather than features.
Comparing sticker prices instead of price per published Short. A $19 plan that makes 13 videos and a $19 plan that makes 30 are not the same product, and neither number includes the time it takes to post.
Posting template content at volume on YouTube. YouTube renamed its “repetitious content” policy to “inauthentic content” on July 15, 2025, and its YouTube Partner Program policies say monetized videos must not be mass-produced, generic or repetitive, including content that looks like it is made with a template. Every tool here can produce that if you let it, so vary formats, sources and hooks.
Auto-posting from a brand-new account on day one. AutoShorts' own FAQ recommends warming up a new account with about 48 hours of normal activity and starting at one post per day, because platforms can flag brand-new accounts that post immediately as bots.
Assuming credits roll over or that annual plans can be refunded. Crayo's credits reset monthly, both competitors refuse refunds, and Vidpal's annual plans grant the year's credits upfront, so plan the year before you buy it.
Where Vidpal Fits, and Where It Doesn't
Vidpal fits creators who want Shorts built from real topics, scripts or articles and published to several platforms with one brand look; it is not the cheapest per minute and it does not cover every viral format.
Where it is not the best fit: Crayo's Clipper plan is cheaper per narrated minute if you are happy to upload by hand. Vidpal has no Reddit story or fake text generator, no voice cloning (retired in May 2026) and no native narration in languages other than English. Its Starter plan exports but does not publish, while AutoShorts auto-posts from its $19 plan. It does not publish to Facebook pages, and it is not an AI avatar or talking-presenter tool.
Where it is strong: Studio accepts a topic, a full script or a URL, offers Shorts of 30 to 90 seconds and long videos of 1 to 10 minutes, 20 visual styles, four background sources and 75 caption presets. Auto Reels writes from real articles on a schedule, with up to 25 topics on Pro and 50 on Business. AI Clips and AI Editing handle footage you already own, from silence and filler-word removal to Smart Reframe for turning landscape into vertical. Publishing to Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and LinkedIn costs no credit on Pro and Business, and Vidpal also works inside Claude as a connector. Current plans are on the pricing page.
If you want to see how a grounded, captioned Short compares with what you make today, the Free plan lets you render watermarked Auto Reels before you commit. Start free on Vidpal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is AutoShorts or Crayo better for faceless Shorts? It depends on the format. AutoShorts is better if you want one series that writes and auto-posts to TikTok, YouTube and Instagram with no daily work. Crayo is better for Reddit stories, fake text videos and gameplay formats, offers 100+ voices and 32 caption styles, and costs less per video, but you upload every file yourself.
Does Crayo post videos to TikTok automatically? No. Crayo's own comparison page says it has no native scheduling or auto-posting, and its faceless channel page describes a one-click export that is ready to upload. You download each MP4 and post it to TikTok, YouTube or Instagram yourself. Crayo's View Tracker can follow views on those platforms after you post.
How much does AutoShorts cost per video in 2026? About $1.15 to $1.46 per posted video at monthly prices. Starter is $19 for three posts a week (about 13 a month), Daily is $39 for about 30, and Hardcore is $69 for about 60. Annual billing at $190, $390 or $690 a year lowers the cost to roughly $0.95 to $1.22 per video.
Can AutoShorts make long-form YouTube videos? Not as of October 2026. Its FAQ says it focuses on short-form content up to 90 seconds and that a long-form feature is not currently available. Series videos run 30 to 60 or 60 to 90 seconds, and scripts can be edited up to 1,600 characters. Vidpal's Studio makes long videos of 1 to 10 minutes on paid plans.
Does Vidpal charge extra credits to publish a video? No. Publishing costs no credit: every finished video's Publish panel posts now or schedules up to 90 days ahead to Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and LinkedIn on Pro and Business. Only the optional Social Scheduler preparation, which writes per-platform copy and makes one AI thumbnail, costs 1 credit per post.
Which tool is best for Reddit story videos? Crayo. It has a dedicated Reddit story generator that turns a pasted or written story into a narrated video, a built-in gameplay library for split-screen backgrounds, 100+ AI voices and 32 caption styles. AutoShorts can produce story-style series from a prompt, and Vidpal can use gameplay backgrounds, but neither has a Reddit-specific generator.
Do AutoShorts, Crayo or Vidpal have a free plan in 2026? Only Vidpal has an active one. AutoShorts lists a free plan but marks it temporarily paused because of botting and spam abuse. Crayo lists no free plan, only free browser tools. Vidpal's Free plan gives 4 one-time credits; Auto Reels and Image Posts render on it with a watermark, while Studio exports need a paid plan.
