How to Turn a PowerPoint, Google Slides or PDF into a Video with AI (2026)
Summarize this article with

To turn a PowerPoint into a video, open the deck in PowerPoint, choose File, then Export, then Create a Video, pick a quality (4K, 1080p, 720p or 480p), choose whether to use recorded timings and narration, and save as an MP4. Google Slides has no direct video download, but eligible users can choose File, then Convert to video, to send the deck to Google Vids and export an MP4 from there; Keynote exports from File, then Export To, then Movie; and Canva downloads any design as an MP4. For a PDF, or for a deck whose slides would make a dull video, the AI route works better: paste the speaker notes or the slide text into a video tool as a script and let it add narration, matching visuals and captions.

This guide is for trainers, marketers, teachers, founders and anyone with a deck that needs to become a YouTube video, a course lesson, a LinkedIn post or a Short. It covers the six methods with exact menu paths, how to add narration and captions, how to make a slide video people actually watch, platform versions, and common mistakes.

Which Method Should You Use?

A deck you'll narrate yourself for a course or internal training: PowerPoint's export with recorded narration, or Keynote's movie export.

A deck that must stay exactly as designed, with animations and transitions: PowerPoint or Keynote export, since converters often drop animations.

A Google Slides deck: Convert to video through Google Vids if your account has it, otherwise download as PowerPoint and export from there, or screen record.

A PDF, a report or a deck with walls of text: the AI route, which rewrites the content as a script and builds a new video around it.

A quick demo nobody will polish: screen record the presentation with your voice.

A deck that needs to become Shorts, Reels or TikToks: the AI route in 9:16, one idea per video.

Method 1: Export a Video from PowerPoint

PowerPoint has exported video for years and still does the best job of preserving animations, transitions and embedded media. On Windows and Microsoft 365: save the deck, then choose File, then Export, then Create a Video (or Export to Video on the Recording tab). Pick a quality: Ultra HD (4K) at 3840×2160, Full HD (1080p) at 1920×1080, HD (720p) at 1280×720 or Standard (480p) at 852×480. Choose Use Recorded Timings and Narrations if you recorded a slide show, or Don't Use Recorded Timings and Narrations and set the seconds to spend on each slide (the default is 5). Click Create Video, name the file and choose MPEG-4 Video (.mp4) or Windows Media Video (.wmv). Long or complex decks can take a while to render (Microsoft Support).

On a Mac, choose File, then Export, set the File Format to MP4, pick the quality and the timing option, and save. Embedded videos play automatically in the export; QuickTime media, macros and ActiveX controls aren't included, and media inserted with very old versions of PowerPoint may be dropped, so convert it first.

To add your voice before exporting, use Record Slide Show on the Recording tab (Slide Show tab in older versions). It captures narration, slide timings, ink and laser pointer movements, and you can re-record a single slide. The export then uses those timings, so the video runs at the pace you presented.

Method 2: Export a Movie from Keynote

On a Mac, open the deck in Keynote and choose File, then Export To, then Movie. Choose Self-Playing to export with fixed slide and build durations, or Slideshow Recording if you recorded narration, pick the resolution (up to 4K) and format, and export; Keynote also exports 9:16 if the document is set to a vertical slide size (Apple Support). Keynote's Record Slideshow feature (Play, then Record Slideshow) captures narration and timings the same way PowerPoint does. Keynote exports preserve Magic Move and other transitions, which makes it the best choice for visually heavy decks on a Mac.

Method 3: Google Slides to Google Vids

Google Slides can't download a video on its own. For users on eligible Google Workspace and Google AI plans, Slides shows File, then Convert to video, which sends the deck into Google Vids, Google's video editor. In Vids you can add a voiceover (your recording or an AI voice), captions, stock media and AI-generated clips, then export an MP4 or, since April 2026, publish straight to YouTube from the File menu, where the upload starts as Private (Google Workspace Updates). Google has made Vids available to personal Google accounts with limited AI generations, and in September 2026 brought Gemini Omni clips to Vids at 1080p.

If your account doesn't show Convert to video, download the deck as a PowerPoint file (File, then Download, then Microsoft PowerPoint) and export from PowerPoint, or use a Slides add-on such as Creator Studio, which converts Slides to MP4 but drops transitions, animations and embedded media. Check the result before you rely on it.

Method 4: Download an MP4 from Canva

If the deck lives in Canva, choose Share, then Download, set the file type to MP4 Video, and download. Canva keeps page animations and timed transitions, and the Present and Record feature captures your camera and voice over the slides for a talking-head version. Canva is also the simplest way to resize a 16:9 deck to 9:16 or 1:1 before export, which matters for the platform versions covered later.

Method 5: Screen Record the Presentation

The free fallback on any computer: start the slide show, record the screen and your microphone, and stop when you're done. On a Mac, press Shift-Command-5 for the Screenshot toolbar and choose Record Entire Screen with your microphone selected in Options. On Windows, press the Windows logo key + Shift + R for Snipping Tool recording, or use OBS Studio for a webcam overlay. The result captures everything exactly as presented, including animations, at the cost of a lower-quality image than a direct export and the need to trim the start and end. Our tutorial video guide covers recorder settings and audio in detail, and the screen recording checker tests your browser if you record in a web tool.

Method 6: The AI Route, from Speaker Notes to a Narrated Video

A slide deck is written to support a speaker. Exported as a video without one, it's a slideshow of bullet points, and viewers leave in seconds. The AI route fixes that by treating the deck as source material rather than as the visuals: you extract the text and notes, an AI rewrites them as a spoken script, and a video tool adds a voice, visuals that match each line, and captions.

Step 1, extract the content: in PowerPoint, File, then Export, then Create Handouts sends slides and notes to Word, or copy the Notes pane slide by slide; in Google Slides, File, then Download, then Plain Text; for a PDF, select all and copy, or let an assistant read the uploaded file.

Step 2, rewrite as a script: ask ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini to turn the notes into a script for the target length, spoken in the first person, with the result stated in the first two lines, one idea per sentence and a visual cue beside each line. A 5-minute video is about 750 words; the free video length calculator converts between the two. Our ChatGPT prompts for video scripts guide has prompt sequences that keep the structure intact.

Step 3, build the video: in Vidpal Studio, paste the script, choose 16:9 for YouTube or a course platform or 9:16 for Shorts, pick a voice and one of 75 caption presets, and let Studio match stock footage or AI images in 20 styles to each scene; regenerate any section's visual or swap in a slide image where a chart must appear exactly. A 9:16 Short costs 1 credit and a 16:9 video of 1 to 10 minutes costs 5. The Studio page shows each video source. If you'd rather drive it from a chat, the same tools work through the Vidpal connector for ChatGPT and Claude.

Step 4, keep the charts: where a slide contains a chart, table or screenshot that must be shown as is, export that slide as a PNG (File, then Save As or Export, choose PNG, Current Slide Only) and place it in the video. Everything else is better rebuilt than copied.

How to Add Narration: Your Voice or an AI Voice

Your voice is best when you are the expert, the audience knows you, or the video is a course lesson. Record with a USB microphone 10 to 20 centimeters from your mouth in a room with soft furnishings, one slide at a time, and re-record any slide you fumble. PowerPoint's Record Slide Show, Keynote's Record Slideshow and Canva's Present and Record all do this.

An AI voice is better when you need many videos, several languages, or a version you can update by editing text. Write the script in full, keep sentences short, and listen to the whole render before publishing, since text-to-speech can misread numbers, acronyms and product names. Vidpal Studio's narration is English, with caption translation and dubbing available in the editor for other languages; our guides to AI voiceover tools and making videos in multiple languages compare the options.

If you recorded a narrated export or a screen recording and it has long pauses and filler words, upload it to an AI editor rather than re-recording. Vidpal's AI Editing removes silences and filler words, adds captions, zooms and b-roll, and exports a cleaner version; the silence and filler-word removal guide shows the settings.

How to Make a Slide Video People Actually Watch

Open with the result, not the title slide: the first line should state what the viewer will know or be able to do, and the agenda slide can go.

Cut the deck by half: a 40-slide presentation delivered in a room becomes a 20-slide video. Merge, delete and move detail into a downloadable file.

One idea per slide, and fewer than 15 words on screen: the voice carries the detail, the slide carries the point.

Add motion every few seconds: slide builds, zooms on charts or cutaway footage. A static slide for 45 seconds is where viewers leave.

Caption everything: most feed viewers watch on mute, and captions make the video accessible. Burn them in for social platforms and upload an SRT for YouTube and course platforms; the subtitle SRT generator makes the file.

End with one action: a link, a download or a question, not a Thank You slide.

Platform Versions: YouTube, Course Platforms, LinkedIn and Shorts

YouTube and course platforms: export 16:9 at 1080p, add chapters for each section of the deck, and write a description that answers the question the video answers. Udemy requires each video to be at least 720p, so 1080p is a safe default; our online course video guide covers lesson structure.

LinkedIn: 1:1 or 4:5 holds more of the feed than 16:9, and a 30 to 90-second cut of the key point outperforms the full deck. Our guide to LinkedIn videos with AI has the specs.

Shorts, Reels and TikTok: don't shrink the deck. Take one idea per slide and make a 30 to 45-second 9:16 video for each with the AI route; a ten-slide deck is ten Shorts. See our guide to making YouTube Shorts with AI.

Internal and email: a 1080p MP4 under 100 MB plays everywhere; the video compressor shrinks a large export, and the video embed code generator creates the embed for an intranet or landing page.

Turning a PDF into a Video

A PDF has no slide timings, animations or notes, so it needs one of two treatments. For a PDF that is really a deck (one visual per page), export the pages as images (Acrobat or Preview can export each page as a PNG) and import them into a video editor as a slideshow with narration. For a report, brochure or whitepaper, use the AI route: copy the text or upload the file to an assistant, ask for a script that leads with the findings, and build the video in a tool with its own visuals. Our guide to turning text into a video with AI covers the script step in depth.

Common Mistakes When Turning Slides into Video

Exporting the deck unchanged: a room presentation and a video have different pacing. Cut, reorder and re-script.

Leaving the default 5 seconds per slide with no narration: viewers can't read a dense slide in five seconds and leave when a simple one lingers. Record timings or use narration.

Losing animations in a converter: test one slide in the tool before converting the deck, and prefer PowerPoint or Keynote export when animations matter.

Relying on 16:9 for every platform: feeds favor 1:1, 4:5 and 9:16.

Skipping captions: mute viewers and accessibility requirements both need them.

Reading the slide text aloud: narration should explain the slide, not repeat it.

Key Takeaways

Takeaway one: PowerPoint exports video from File, then Export, then Create a Video, with 4K to 480p options and recorded narration; Keynote exports from File, then Export To, then Movie.

Takeaway two: Google Slides needs Google Vids (File, then Convert to video) or a detour through PowerPoint, and Canva downloads MP4 directly.

Takeaway three: decks exported unchanged make poor videos; cut by half, add motion and caption everything.

Takeaway four: for PDFs, text-heavy decks and anything bound for Shorts, the AI route (notes to script to narrated video) produces a video rather than a slideshow.

Takeaway five: make platform-specific versions: 16:9 for YouTube and courses, 1:1 or 4:5 for LinkedIn, 9:16 for Shorts with one idea per video.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I turn a PowerPoint into a video with narration? Record the narration first with Record Slide Show on the Recording tab, then choose File, then Export, then Create a Video, select Use Recorded Timings and Narrations, pick a quality such as Full HD (1080p), and save as an MP4. The export runs at the pace you recorded.

Can Google Slides export a video? Not directly. On eligible Google Workspace and Google AI plans, File, then Convert to video, sends the deck to Google Vids, which exports an MP4 or publishes to YouTube. Otherwise download the deck as a PowerPoint file and export from PowerPoint, or screen record the presentation.

What resolution should I export a presentation video at? 1080p (1920×1080) for YouTube, LinkedIn and course platforms, which covers Udemy's 720p minimum with margin. Use 4K only for large screens, since files are much larger and most viewers watch on phones and laptops.

How do I turn a PDF into a video? Export the pages as images and build a narrated slideshow in a video editor, or copy the text, ask an AI assistant for a script that leads with the findings, and build a new video in a tool that adds narration, visuals and captions. The second approach produces a watchable video rather than a page-turner.

Can AI turn my slides into a video automatically? Yes, with a script step in between. AI assistants rewrite speaker notes or slide text as a spoken script, and video tools such as Vidpal Studio add narration, matching visuals and captions from that script. Fully automatic converters that keep the slides as the visuals produce slideshows, which perform poorly.

How long should a presentation video be? As short as the content allows. A 30-minute talk usually becomes a 5 to 8-minute video, and each key point can become a 30 to 45-second Short. Viewers watch a video alone, without the social pressure of a room, so pacing matters more.

Will animations and transitions survive the conversion? In PowerPoint and Keynote exports, yes. In Google Slides add-ons and many online converters, no. Test one slide before converting a whole deck, and prefer the native export when animations matter.

Turn Your Deck into a Video

A deck is a script waiting to be spoken. Export it directly when the slides are the point, and rebuild it as a narrated video when the message is.

To turn speaker notes or a PDF into a narrated, captioned video, start in Vidpal Studio or do it from a chat with the Vidpal connector for ChatGPT and Claude. You can create a free account to explore, then pick a plan on the pricing page when you're ready to export.
