No, Claude does not generate video footage. As of October 2026, no Claude model synthesizes video, and Claude can't watch a video file: it reads text, documents and images (JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP), not MP4s. Claude still gets you to a finished video three ways: it writes the script, hooks, storyboard and shot list; it writes code that renders video (HTML and SVG animations, Remotion, Manim, ffmpeg through Claude Code, or the new Claude Motion beta on Team and Enterprise plans); and it operates a video tool such as Vidpal through an MCP connector that returns a captioned MP4.
This guide is for creators and marketers who use Claude and want a video at the end of the conversation. It covers what Claude can read, what Claude Motion does, the three routes with a worked prompt sequence for each, a decision guide, costs, how Claude compares with ChatGPT and Gemini, and common mistakes. Facts are current as of October 2026.

Can Claude Generate Video? The Short Answer
Claude cannot generate video footage. Anthropic's documentation describes Claude as an image understanding model only: it can analyze images but cannot generate, edit or create them (Claude vision docs). Anthropic's help center adds that Claude builds diagrams, charts and interactive visuals with HTML and SVG instead of generating photos or illustrations (Claude Help Center).
That still leaves a lot. Most of the work in a video that performs isn't footage: it's the angle, the hook, the script, the scene order, the captions and the edit. Claude is strong at planning and writing, it can write code that renders motion graphics, and it can drive a video tool that renders for it.
What Claude Can Read: Images, PDFs and Why Video Files Don't Work
In the Claude apps you can upload documents such as PDF, DOCX, CSV, TXT, HTML, EPUB and JSON files, plus JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP images. Video and audio files aren't on the supported list. Anthropic's vision docs add that animated images aren't supported (only the first frame of a GIF is used) and cap claude.ai at 20 images per message.
So Claude can't watch your rough cut. Two workarounds help. A transcript: export captions from your editor or YouTube Studio and paste them in, and Claude can tighten the script or mark lines to cut; our guide to transcribing video to text for free covers the tools. Still frames: in Claude Code, Claude can run ffmpeg to pull a frame every few seconds and look at those images to check framing, on-screen text or thumbnail candidates. Pacing, music and delivery are still yours to judge.
What Is Claude Motion?
Claude Motion launched in beta on October 8, 2026, alongside Claude Dashboards. It turns your content into short animations, such as a 30-second explainer for an all-hands, an animated chart for a board deck or a product walkthrough, which you can edit in an editor or by chatting and then export as an MP4 (Claude Help Center).
Claude Motion doesn't use a video generation model, so it doesn't create realistic footage or people. Claude writes code that animates your text, charts, shapes and images, which is why you can change one word, number or timing without regenerating the rest. It is in beta on Team and Enterprise plans only and counts toward your plan's usage limits; Free, Pro and Max plans don't include it.
Claude Motion suits animated explainers and data stories built from material you already have (see how to make explainer videos with AI). It isn't a faceless-channel tool: there is no narration engine, stock library or caption preset system.
Way 1: Claude Writes the Script, Hooks, Storyboard and Shot List
The simplest way to make videos with Claude is to let Claude handle pre-production. Claude turns a messy idea into a hook that states the premise in the first two seconds, a body with one idea per line and a closing line that earns a comment. Ask for a visual cue beside every line and you have a shot list; ask for scenes with a camera direction and duration and you have a storyboard.
A worked prompt sequence for a 45-second Short: “I run a channel about home cooking for busy parents. Give me ten Short ideas about meal prep, each with a hook under ten words.” Pick one, then: “Write a 45-second script for idea 4 at about 150 words per minute. Open with the result, keep sentences under twelve words, and end with a question that invites comments.” Then: “Make a shot list: for each line give the visual, whether it's stock footage, a screen recording or a phone close-up, and the on-screen text.” Finish with: “Give me three alternative hooks: a curiosity gap, a bold claim and a mistake to avoid.”
Read the script aloud and verify every number. Our guides on how to write a YouTube script and video hooks that stop the scroll set the standard, and the free video length calculator converts word count into runtime.
Way 2: Claude Writes Code That Renders Video
A video is a sequence of frames, and frames can be produced by code. There are four code routes, from lightest to heaviest.
HTML, CSS and SVG animations: in claude.ai, ask for an animated artifact, such as kinetic typography or an animated bar chart, and Claude builds a page you can preview and revise. Artifacts work on every plan, including Free, but an artifact is a web page, not a video file: screen-record it, or have Claude Code capture it frame by frame with a headless browser and join the frames with ffmpeg.
Remotion: a framework for making videos with React, where each frame is a rendered component and the command line renders an MP4. Remotion maintains official Agent Skills for coding agents like Claude Code, installed with npx skills add remotion-dev/skills (Remotion docs). Remotion is free for individuals, non-profits and companies with up to three employees; larger companies need a company license.
Manim: Manim Community is a free, MIT-licensed Python library for mathematical animations. Claude writes the scene, Claude Code renders it, and you get an MP4 of equations transforming and graphs being drawn.
ffmpeg through Claude Code: Claude Code can write and run ffmpeg commands that trim and join clips, reframe landscape to vertical, burn in an SRT subtitle file, normalize loudness or export a GIF. It's editing without a timeline: you describe the edit and correct it in words. Our Claude Code video editing guide shows how this pairs with an editor connector.
Example: A Remotion Short Built with Claude Code
In an empty folder, tell Claude Code: “Create a Remotion project for a 1080×1920 vertical video at 30 frames per second, and install Remotion's agent skills.” Then: “Build a 20-second composition: the headline ‘3 numbers that explain the housing market’ animates in word by word, three scenes each show a number counting up with a one-line caption, then an end card with my handle.” Iterate: “Slow the count-up to 1.5 seconds and add a progress bar.” Finally: “Render it to out/housing.mp4.”
Preview in Remotion Studio before each render. You get crisp motion graphics with exact numbers and brand colors, but no narration or voice-synced captions unless you add them yourself.
Way 3: Claude Operates a Video Tool Through MCP
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant call another product's tools with your permission. Custom connectors using remote MCP are available on Claude's Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, with Free users limited to one (Claude Help Center). This route ends with a rendered MP4 rather than a script or a code project, and needs no coding. For the concept, read AI agents for video editing and MCP explained.
The Fast Way: Finished Videos from Claude with Vidpal
Vidpal is an AI video creation, editing and publishing app with an MCP connector. Add it from the Vidpal for Claude page or paste https://app.vidpal.ai/api/mcp as a custom connector and sign in. Claude gets 25 tools: an upload link for your footage, AI Editing actions (captions, silence and filler-word removal, auto zooms, auto b-roll), clips from long recordings, video generation from a topic, script or article URL, export, and publishing or scheduling. The connector docs list every tool.
A worked prompt sequence: “Make a 40-second portrait video about why most budgets fail in the first month, and show me the script before you confirm.” Edit the draft in plain language (“shorter hook, swap the second tip for one about irregular expenses”). Then: “Use stock footage, pick a calm English female voice and a bold caption preset.” Then: “Confirm and export.” On Pro or Business, one more line schedules it to YouTube and Instagram. Claude asks before anything that spends credits or publishes.
Under the hood this is Vidpal Studio: a 9:16 Short costs 1 credit, a 16:9 Long Video of 1 to 10 minutes costs 5, visuals are stock footage or AI images in 20 styles shown with camera motion, and captions use one of 75 presets. Credits are the same as in the dashboard, and Studio exports need a paid plan (Starter is $19 a month for 15 credits; see pricing).
Vidpal doesn't make AI avatars or lip-synced presenters, and Studio narration is English, with caption translation and dubbing in the editor. To appear on camera, film yourself and use the upload link. Our guides to editing videos from Claude with MCP and automating short-form content with Claude and Vidpal go deeper.
Which Route Should You Use?
Script, hooks or a shot list for footage you'll film or source: Way 1, on any Claude plan.
Precise motion graphics with exact numbers and brand colors, such as data explainers or math lessons: Way 2 with Remotion or Manim, or Claude Motion on Team and Enterprise.
Trimming, joining, reframing or subtitling files you already have: Way 2 with ffmpeg in Claude Code.
A finished narrated, captioned Short or YouTube video from a topic or article, or editing and publishing your own recordings without an editor: Way 3 with a connector like Vidpal.
Realistic generated footage: Claude can't make it. Generate those shots in a video model such as Gemini Omni (see can Gemini make videos) and use Claude for the script. Our Sora 2 vs Veo 3 comparison covers the earlier generation of video models.
What Claude Can't Do for Video
No footage or voice: Claude can't synthesize realistic scenes or people, and it doesn't produce a narration track; voice comes from a text-to-speech tool, a connector or your own recording.
No video or audio input: give Claude transcripts or still frames instead of MP4s.
No file without a renderer: Remotion, Manim and ffmpeg render on your computer, connectors render on the vendor's servers, and artifacts are web pages.
No accuracy guarantee: Claude can state wrong numbers confidently, so every figure needs a source.
What It Costs to Make Videos with Claude
Claude: the Free plan includes chat, artifacts and one custom connector. Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually, and includes Claude Code; Max starts at $100 a month; Team Standard seats cost $20 per seat per month billed annually (Claude pricing). Claude Motion is only on Team and Enterprise.
Code tools: ffmpeg and Manim are free and open source; Remotion is free for individuals and companies of up to three employees. Rendering runs on your own computer.
Vidpal: the connector costs nothing extra and spends normal credits. Free includes 4 one-time credits, Studio exports need a paid plan, and plans run from Starter at $19 a month (15 credits) to Pro at $39 (40 credits, publishing) and Business at $69 (100 credits). The cheapest route to a finished narrated video without manual editing is a free Claude account, the Vidpal connector and a Starter plan.
Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini for Video
Gemini: the only one of the three with a built-in video generator as of October 2026. Gemini Omni makes clips of up to 10 seconds with audio on paid Google AI plans, and Gemini can analyze uploaded videos and YouTube videos.
ChatGPT: OpenAI discontinued the Sora app and website on April 26, 2026 and set the Sora API to shut down on September 24, 2026 (OpenAI Help Center), so ChatGPT users no longer have OpenAI's dedicated video generator. ChatGPT still writes scripts, creates images and can operate video tools through connectors; can ChatGPT make videos covers that connector route.
Claude: no footage or video input, but strong writing, Claude Code, Claude Motion for teams, and MCP connectors on every plan. Claude vs ChatGPT for video editing compares the two chat assistants in detail.
Pick Gemini for generated shots or video analysis and Claude for writing, code and running a toolchain.
Common Mistakes When Making Videos with Claude
Asking for a video file in a plain chat: without a connector, code environment or Claude Motion, you get a description. Pick the route first.
Trusting feedback on a video Claude can't see: comments on a video you only described are guesses. Give it a transcript or frames.
Vague code prompts: give the size (1080×1920 for Shorts), frame rate, scene durations, fonts and colors.
Skipping the script review: in connector flows the script is the cheapest thing to change, while re-rendering spends credits.
Forgetting disclosure: realistic AI footage from another tool needs a platform label; see our AI content labels guide.
Key Takeaways
Takeaway one: Claude doesn't generate video or accept video files; it reads text, documents and JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP images.
Takeaway two: Claude's most reliable video job is pre-production: ideas, hooks, scripts, storyboards and shot lists, on any plan.
Takeaway three: Claude produces real MP4s through code (Remotion, Manim or ffmpeg in Claude Code) and through Claude Motion on Team and Enterprise plans.
Takeaway four: an MCP connector such as Vidpal turns a Claude conversation into a finished, captioned and scheduled video, with credits confirmed first.
Takeaway five: for realistic generated footage use Gemini Omni, and use Claude for the script and plan around those shots.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Claude make videos? Claude can't generate video footage or produce a video file in a normal chat. It makes videos indirectly by writing scripts and shot lists, writing code that renders video with Remotion, Manim or ffmpeg, and operating video apps such as Vidpal through MCP connectors that return a finished MP4.
Can I upload a video to Claude? Not as a video. Claude accepts documents and JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP images, and only the first frame of an animated GIF is read. For feedback on a video, give Claude a transcript or still frames.
What is Claude Motion? Claude Motion is a beta feature launched on October 8, 2026 that turns text, charts, shapes and images into short code-based animations exportable as MP4. It doesn't use a video generation model, so it can't create realistic footage or people, and it's on Team and Enterprise plans only.
Can Claude Code make videos? Yes, with tools on your computer. Claude Code can build and render Remotion projects, write and run Manim scenes, and run ffmpeg commands that trim, join, reframe and subtitle footage. Claude Code requires a paid Claude plan.
Is there a free way to make videos with Claude? Partly. Claude's Free plan includes chat, artifacts and one custom connector, so scripting, shot lists, animated artifacts and connecting one video tool cost nothing. Rendering a finished video usually involves a paid plan somewhere in the chain.
Which is better for video, Claude or Gemini? Gemini, when you need generated footage or video analysis, because Gemini Omni creates clips with audio on paid Google AI plans. Claude is better for scripts, code-based video and running editing tools through connectors, and many creators use both.
Does the Vidpal connector for Claude cost extra? No. The connector is free and spends the same Vidpal credits as the dashboard, with a confirmation before anything that spends credits or publishes. Studio exports need a paid plan, starting at $19 a month for 15 credits.
